Kindergarten students in Rachel Inversa’s art class at Arrowhead Elementary School learned about what it takes to illustrate a book from a very special guest. Three Village Central School District visual arts coordinator Jennifer Trettner visited the art class to co-teach the lesson. Ms. Trettner illustrated and designed a published children’s book herself, “Little Johnny Diamond and the Very Windy Day.”

Ms. Trettner discussed being an illustrator and what an illustration is. She introduced them to western landscapes, similar to what she designed in the book, and reviewed the art concepts of foreground, middle-ground, background, rule of thirds and composition. She also showed them works of the famous artist, Henri Matisse.

Students listened to a read aloud of “Little Johnny Diamond and the Very Windy Day,” then created their own Matisse-inspired western landscapes based on the book. Students were eager to learn from an expert right in the Three Village Central School District community and created beautiful pieces of art to display!
