R.C. Murphy Junior High School paid homage to its namesake during a Heritage Day celebration on May 8. After school, students and staff gathered for several activities to honor Robert Cushman Murphy’s life as an ornithologist and naturalist.

Sweetbriar Nature Center joined the celebration and introduced students to several local animals including two owls. The Long Island Explorium did a science experiment with students and at another station, students created origami birds. Additionally, the school’s ecology club also held a plant sale throughout the event. During the school day, students composed nature-themed writing in their English classes. Heritage Day allowed students to learn about local history and Murphy’s legacy through engaging, hands-on activities.
