Two teams of Ward Melville High School students demonstrated mathematical skills during this year’s High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM). During this international competition teams of up to four students are charged to develop mathematical models to solve real-world problems and submit a formal paper. The competition emphasizes problem-solving, collaboration and clear communication. This year, it attracted 1,055 teams from 474 schools across 20 countries and regions.
Representing Ward Melville were Team 15041: Amanda Liang, Sarah Wu and Victoria Ye and Team 15702: Tina Xing and Anna Xing, both of which performed exceptionally well. Team 15702 earned the Finalist designation, placing them in the top 5% of all competitors. Team 15041 achieved the highest distinction, Outstanding Winner, awarded to only eight teams worldwide, placing them in the top 1%. Out of these eight Outstanding Winners, only three were from the United States, and two were from New York State, our own Team 15041 and a team from Stuyvesant High School.
