During February break, thirty-eight 10th, 11th and 12th grade Ward Melville students embarked on an unforgettable nine-day adventure. Their journey began in Quito, Ecuador, where they stood on the equatorial line before continuing to the breathtaking Galápagos Islands, one of the world’s most pristine natural paradises.

As they explored the islands, students encountered an astonishing array of wildlife, including giant tortoises, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies and playful sea lions. Snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, they swam alongside vibrant reef fish, sea turtles and penguins. The islands’ diverse plant life also captivated them, from the towering Scalesia trees in the highlands to the resilient mangroves and cacti that thrive in the harsh coastal environment. This immersive experience provided invaluable knowledge about the Galápagos’ delicate ecosystem and the importance of conservation efforts in preserving its unique biodiversity.

The students concluded their journey in Otavalo, a town in the Andean mountains, where they learned about the local way of life. From bustling marketplaces to the homes of musicians, they fully immersed themselves in the community’s rich traditions and culture. They witnessed firsthand how artisans crafted handmade goods and how locals thrived with fewer resources. Through this experience, the students not only adapted to a simpler way of life but also built meaningful connections with others.
