On Monday, March 3, students in Mr. Neuberger’s Human Rights and Genocide class had the unique opportunity to hear from Carl Wilkens, the only American who remained in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide.
“This was an extraordinary opportunity for students to hear from someone who not only witnessed history but took action in the face of unimaginable circumstances,” said Dr. Cone, director of social studies. Wilkens provided an overview of the Rwandan genocide, interwoven with personal accounts of his experiences.
In addition to recounting historical events, Wilkens explored the neurological aspects of trauma and the mechanisms of healing, offering students a deeper understanding of resilience in the aftermath of mass violence. His insights fostered a powerful connection to students’ studies of the Holocaust and other historical injustices, emphasizing the impact of individual choices, empathy and humanitarian action.
