As part of their in-depth exploration of African American history, students in Mr. Boltrek’s AP African American Studies course at Ward Melville High School recently visited the historic Joseph Lloyd Manor in Lloyd Harbor. This immersive experience shed light on the critical role slavery played in colonial New York, particularly on Long Island, which, by 1730, had the largest enslaved population in the northern colonies.

Through hands-on activities, students examined primary source documents such as census records, inventories, advertisements and poetry to uncover the harsh realities faced by the enslaved community. They also explored the architecture of the manor and discussed stories of resistance and resilience among those who lived and worked there. The field trip offered students a unique opportunity to interpret the past and grapple with the complexities of Long Island’s history, deepening their understanding of how slavery shaped the region and the lives of its people.
