At the Three Village Central School District Board of Education meeting on Dec. 11, athletic director Kevin Finnerty praised the success of the many teams and student-athletes who competed this past fall. Finnerty noted it was a historic season for Ward Melville High School athletics, and quite possibly the best of all time. Every single team made it to the playoffs, six teams made it to the county finals, five teams won a county championship, three teams won Long Island championships, two teams were named state finalists and two teams won state championships. Additionally, several individual student athletes competed at the state level and earned postseason awards including all-league, all-conference, all-county, all-state, all-region and even all-American.
Most importantly, every single fall season team was recognized as a New York State Scholar Athlete Team. Ward Melville High School also earned the School of Distinction Award from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association for having all teams earn scholar athlete status last year. It’s the fifth consecutive year Ward Melville High School received this honor.
