The Ward Melville High School math team was successful in two highly prestigious mathematics competitions last month – the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament (HMMT) held on Nov. 9 and the 2024 Princeton University Math Competition (PUMaC) held on Nov. 23.

At the HMMT, the Ward Melville team won the following awards:

  • Overall Individual Awards 42nd place: Michael Retakh
  • General Round 11th place: Michael Retakh
  • Theme Round 9th place: Harry Gao
  • Theme Round 44th place: Eric Zhong
  • Guts Round 12th place: Ward Melville Math Team
  • Sweepstakes 17th place: Ward Melville Math Team

Participation in PUMaC is merit-based, with each team submitting an application outlining their math accomplishments. Teams are selected to participate based on these achievements. Besides winning 1st place in the Power Round and the Team Overall Competitions, here are some of this team’s impressive individual results in this event:

  • Harry Gao: 1st place in Number Theory and 3rdplace in the Individual Overall Ranking
  • Eric Zhong: 8th place in Algebra and 8th place in Combinatorics
  • Shirley Xiong: 6th place in Number Theory and 8th place in Geometry
  •

This was Ward Melville’s first time winning first place in PUMaC, making it an extraordinary achievement for the team. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and success.

Looking ahead, the team’s next competition will be the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) in February, an exclusive invitational exam for the top math students in the country.
