The Board of Education recognized a Minnesauke student and two staff members during its July 2 meeting. Minnesauke Elementary School Principal Mrs. Pickford explained the situation that led to the quick-thinking and life-saving efforts of these individuals.
Last month during lunch in the cafeteria, fourth grader Aidan Sterne noticed one of his friends was in distress. He quickly alerted lunch monitor Jessica Carioshia who successfully performed the Heimlich Maneuver and cleared the food that the student was choking on. The student was seen by the school nurse and cleared to return to class. It’s important to note Aidan was in Mrs. Archer’s class at the time of the incident. Every year, Mrs. Archer does demonstrations of the Heimlich with students in her class.
“Increased awareness amongst her students of the signs of choking and the Heimlich Maneuver surely played a part in the positive outcome of the situation,” Mrs. Pickford said.
