Second graders in Ms. Lenza’s class at Setauket Elementary School learned all about Earth Day during a joint project with science teacher Ms. Morseman and art teacher Ms. Muzzonigro. Students first learned about Earth Day and its importance, as well as the many steps they can take to help protect the planet. To celebrate Earth Day, the second graders started green bean seeds right from the classroom using a damp paper towel and Ziploc bag.

Students designed mini greenhouses for their seeds to grow in. The greenhouses will hang in the windows of their second grade classroom for students to observe and log the plant’s growth over the next few weeks. The project connected the second grade science unit on plant adaptation to an art project, in a hands-on, creative way.

Third graders in Ms. Sheprow’s class at Setauket Elementary School are excited to experience the solar eclipse on April 8. Ahead of the natural phenomenon, students learned about the solar eclipse through a collaborative art and science project.

They first learned about how an eclipse happens with science teacher Ms. Morseman. Then, they worked with art teacher Ms. Muzzonigro to use black paper, colored chalk and black paint to recreate what an eclipse looks like. They looked forward to seeing how their artwork compares to the sky.

Fifth graders at Setauket Elementary School stepped into the “courtroom” on April 3 to present the case, “Fairytale Land vs. Goldilocks.” Students acted as well-known fairytale characters in the trial-based performance where the prosecution argued Goldilocks was guilty of breaking into the Three Bears’ home.

The show focused on several themes including treating others with respect and kindness. Ultimately, the fairytale characters learned the importance of communication and working out their problems. The program was sponsored by the Setauket PTA and helped students learn about government, which compliments the social studies curriculum.

First graders at Setauket Elementary School learned about the life cycle of chicks right from their classrooms. Students made observations throughout the process. They held lights up to the egg to help understand the growth and development process. The first graders patiently counted down to hatch day when they would meet their classroom chicks for the first time. Several classes created chick hats and art projects to celebrate.

Once the chicks hatched, students were eager to interact with them before they returned to the farm in Yaphank. The hands-on experience provided students with an engaging way to learn about life science.

Science research students from P.J. Gelinas Junior High School pushed into classes at Setauket Elementary School to collaborate on STEM activities. The seventh and eighth graders used the Storyboard platform to write children’s books about influential women in science, technology, engineering and math. They shared their books with the elementary students, then conducted hands-on activities relating to the accomplishments of the women they wrote about.

The women scientists students learned about included Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Hodgkin, Chien Shiung Wu, Marie Curie, Rosalind Franklin, Mary Anning and Mae Jemison. Some of the related activities they participated in were constructing paper rockets, building 3D candy DNA models, completing an invisible ink lab and making glow-in-the-dark slime.

Not only were the elementary students eager to collaborate with those from the junior high school, the activities were also a culmination to Women’s History Month.
