Driver Education
How do you register for the district’s Driver Education program and what are the requirements?
The Driver Education program is offered at Ward Melville High School during the fall, spring, and summer semesters for qualified residents of the Three Village Central School District.
In order to qualify for admission to this course, the following priorities have been developed and will be utilized:
• Students will be accepted according to the established guidelines, and will register in grade/age priority.
• Students must meet the age eligibility standard established by the New York State Education Department.
• Students selected to the program will be given an opportunity to select their lecture classes and driving classes according to the grade/age priorities.
• Below are the requirements and procedures that must be followed for students to receive their “white certificate” [Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285)].
• Students must complete 48 hours of the program.
- 24 hours of classroom instruction.
- 24 hours of in-car instruction (18 hours of observation and 6 hours behind the wheel).
• Students must pass both portions of the program with a minimum grade of 65.
• All required homework, tests and reports must be completed.
• All students must take and pass the final exam.
What happens if I miss a Driver Education class?
Students are able to miss a total of five classes combined, but not more than three of either lecture or driving (i.e., 3 driving/2 lectures or 3 lectures/2 driving) or they will automatically be dropped from the program without a refund.
How do I make up a missed class?
Any missed class must be made up. The program will provide students three make-up lectures at the end of the course. Driving make-ups are are during the scheduled program, pending availability.
How will I know if a class is canceled?
If classes are canceled due to inclement weather, an announcement will be made on WALK (97.5 FM) and WBLI (106.1 FM).
It will also be posted on the district website, www.threevillagecsd.org. If your class is canceled, a make-up date will be scheduled.
Who do I contact with any questions?
