First graders at Arrowhead Elementary School are learning about the phases of the moon with the help of a tasty treat.

As part of the science curriculum, first graders are learning about the sky and its patterns. Most recently, they learned about the eight phases of the moon.

Students used Oreo cookies to help visualize these phases. The frosting represented the moon, and the cookie symbolized the night sky. Students were tasked with separating the cookies and scraping off the frosting to match the appearance of each phase.

Additionally, students took home a moon journal to keep track of the night sky. They were encouraged to draw what the moon looks like over a two-week period and bring their journals back to school to compare their entries with their classmates.
